RECENT ARREST AND COURT ACTIVITY
As a result of the photographs in last week
bulletins regarding the recovered homemade trailer, Detective Fennell was
contacted by Western Farm Services, who positively identified the trailer as
belonging to them. The estimated value was $4,000.00 and the trailer was
released to Western Farm Services.
This week four cases were adjudicated in court
on subjects that pled to criminal charges in lieu of a jury trial. Jose
Avalos pled to three felony counts of vehicle theft, receiving stolen
property and altering a vehicle identification number, which netted Avalos
two years in prison. Tiffany Block sixty days in jail and three years
probation for a forgery charge. Jeremiah Lamas was sentenced to two years
in prison for vehicle theft. Juan Mendoza pled to one year in jail and
probation for receiving stolen property. Ignacio Diaz was also sentenced to
one year in jail and probation for vehicle theft.
BAKERSFIELD ACTIVITY
Suspects
stole a large water pump from a storage yard near Shafter Road. The
property is described as a General Electric model #5K254DP6005 15-horsepower
motor attached to a 10 PA pump shaft (blue and white). If you have any

Three
suspects in a white Chevrolet truck stole numerous bales of hay from a

A device
called a lubricator was taken from a storage yard on Elk Hills oilfield.
This equipment is custom fabricated and made of steel, 10’ x 2 7/8” with a
pressure gauge, polish rod and packing attachment. The lubricator is used
to run wire line tools and prevents a blowout from occurring at the wellhead
when wire line tools are being deployed or extracted from the wells. If you

homemade pipe trailer was located on the dirt shoulder of Wegis Road in

On 9/7/07 a 20' homemade trailer with an
aluminum tank was found on Granite Rd. North of Round Mountain Rd. The
trailer/tank was towed and stored by the Sheriff's Department. If this is

RCIU ARREST & COURT ACTIVITY:
On 8/28/07, Robert Christiansen, 45 years, pled
guilty to misdemeanor count of grand theft in lieu of facing a jury trial.
His co-defendant, James Morse, 45 years, pled guilty to a felony count of
receiving stolen property and is due back in court on 9/26/07 to be
sentenced.
FYI - There has been an increase in irrigation
pipe thefts in the last six months. The trend seems to be gravitating back
toward aluminum from wire.

TAFT ACTIVITY:
Suspects stole numerous
items from locked toolboxes on an oilfield drilling rig off Airport Road.
The stolen property consists of a set of open ended wrenches, a set of
sockets/ratchets, a 24" pipe wrench, two safety harnesses, an impact wrench
with the gun, a Cavins sand line meter, and two 3’x2” lifting slings.

Report any of the following types of activity:
v
Suspicious vehicles seen in or
around your orchards, vineyards, or open fields. Obtain vehicle
description, license plate number, location and/or direction of travel. If
possible, obtain description of occupants.
v
Vehicles that repeatedly drive by
in a short span of time, especially in a slow manner. Any noises heard late
at night such as vehicle engines or voices being heard.
v
Suspicious persons walking around,
even briefly. Obtain a description of the subject(s) including physical and
clothing descriptions and report it immediately.
v
Owners, employees, watchmen, or
rental subjects that live near storage containers, sheds, shops, or fenced
yards should be especially vigilant for unusual noises, barking dogs,
strange vehicles, or subjects in the area. Recent patrol operations by RCIU
Detectives revealed many instances when these locations were driven through
by RCIU Detectives causing engine noise, spotlight use, and barking dogs
without any challenge from nearby occupants.

that you are unaware of and have not approved.
Report any and all activity that makes you suspicious. It
may be nothing; but then again, you may be preventing yourself from becoming
a victim.

RCIU ARREST & COURT ACTIVITY:
A McFarland
man, was sentenced last week to 4 years in state prison for his plea of
guilty in a grand theft case. He was the suspect in the thefts of a water
pump, lawn mower, and rotor-tiller. All the property was recovered and
returned to the owners.
A Bakersfield
man, pled guilty to selling produce at the roadside without a permit. He was
fined $500. James Thornsberry, age 43 of Bakersfield, was fined $335 for the
same offense.

RECENT RCIU ACTIVITY:
A Bakersfield
woman pled guilty to misdemeanor destruction of property and was sentenced
to 21 days in jail, 3 years probation, and ordered to pay Chevron-Texaco for
damages she caused in April to an electrical panel box on oilfield property.
Another
Bakersfield woman pled guilty to misdemeanor possession of stolen
telecommunication wire. She had possession of stolen AT&T wire from a new
development jobsite and had planned to recycle it. She was sentenced to 90
days in jail and 3 years probation.
A Lamont man
was put on one year probation and fined $200 for selling produce roadside
without a business license or a health permit.
A Bakersfield
man was sentenced this week to two years in state prison for his guilty plea
for being in possession of a stolen Carson trailer. The trailer was returned
to the owner.

48 12”rims with tires from grape picking carts and wheelbarrows. The
suspects also stole 20 white plastic grape picking tubs (18”w x 24”l x

RECENT RCIU ACTIVITY:
Since 6-15-07,
members of the Rural Crime Unit have spent many hours in the southern
portion of Kern County for enforcement of permit and license compliance of
roadside produce vendors, and to patrol fields, vineyards, and orchards for
thefts in progress. The Detectives were assisted by the Sheriff’s
helicopter, which spent approximately 21 hours in the air with an RCIU
Detective as an observer. Eight people have been cited for not having the
proper business licenses and health permits for selling roadside produce.
Eight people were caught taking watermelons without permission, four were
caught taking cantaloupes, and one was caught taking grapes. Vehicles
moving around on farm property were stopped and occupants were questioned.
This is an ongoing project while crops are in the process of harvesting.

Bonnie Mann,
age 46 of Buttonwillow, was sentenced last week to a year in jail for her
plea of guilty in a grand theft case. Mann stole environmental fencing from
a remote location in the Taft area and recycled it. The owner of the fencing
was Chevron-Texaco.
Robert Fowler,
age 46 of Taft, was sentenced last week to 16 months in prison and
restitution to Chevron- Texaco for his plea in a grand theft case from 2006.
Fowler was arrested after leading Deputies in a pursuit through the
oilfields around Taft after he was observed stealing wire from a power
substation.

COPPER THEFTS:
Suspects stole 180' of 1/2" copper wire from two windmills off Sherwood
Avenue. Suspects cut the wires to irrigation pumps in the McCombs area, but
did not steal the copper before they were interrupted by security guards and

McKITTRICK ACTIVITY:
Suspects stole property from an Emergency Response Van on oilfield property
on Reward Road. The suspects stole two Rubbermaid 4' folding tables, a
clock, a 3'x4' dry erase whiteboard, Visqueen clear plastic sheathing, a
cellular telephone, a trailer hitch, a 13" silver TV/VCR combination with a
remote, and three sets of Kmart brand purple 2-way radios. If you have any

TAFT ACTIVITY:
Suspects stole miscellaneous property from a storage area off South Lake
Road. The suspects stole four clamps, two fertilizer shanks, miscellaneous
steel pipe, and light green irrigation pipe fittings. If you have any

WASCO ACTIVITY:
Suspects stole a 2003 white Carson single axle utility trailer, license
#4EF8703, from a job site on Griffith. If you have any information in regard

Suspects damaged fuel storage tanks on Western Avenue and stole
approximately 46 gallons of gasoline. Four days later the suspects returned
and drove through an almond orchard, causing significant damage in the
process, to steal gasoline a second time from storage tanks. If you have any

pumps near Wildwood Road. Suspects stole 20’ of heavy gauge copper wire and
30’ of clear hose with fittings from a location near Wildwood Road. Suspects
stole 150’ of copper wire from irrigation pumps near Scofield Avenue.
Suspects stole 150’ of copper wire and an electric water pump motor from
